Bringing Science to Young Children

How can red cabbage juice change colour? On 20 October 2026, children from two groups at the Mojca unit of Mavrica Trebnje Kindergarten explored natural pigments and learned about the work of researchers through colourful experiments at a workshop delivered by Rudolfovo.
The workshop, “The Magic of Anthocyanins”, took place as part of the Researchers in Schools activities within the RhythmOfLife project. It introduced children to the world of research and gave them an opportunity to carry out experiments themselves.
The children explored anthocyanins – natural pigments that change colour depending on the acidity of a solution. Using red cabbage juice, baking soda, vinegar and lemon juice, they produced colour changes while practising with test tubes and droppers.
The hands-on activities sparked their curiosity and enthusiasm for science. By observing, experimenting and making discoveries, the children had the chance to feel like real researchers.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No. 101305421.
