Prof. Dr. Janez Povh

I am Janez Povh, professor of mathematics at University of Ljubljana and scientific councillor at Rudolfovo. I hold BSc, MSc and PhD in Mathematics, and I serve as the Managing Director of the public research institute Rudolfovo - Science and Technology Centre Novo mesto for the mandate 1. 9. 2022 - 31. 8. 2027. Previously, I was Dean of the Faculty of Information Studies in Novo mesto, and then I developed research excellence as a member and head of the LeCAD Laboratory at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Ljubljana.

My research work focuses on (i) development of methods and tools for solving complex optimisation problems, and on (ii) analysis and modelling of big data. Due to the high computational complexity of these areas, my work strongly relies on using supercomputers and quantum computers. I use the best available supercomputers in EU and some of the few available quantum computers, especially those based on quantum annealing.

I am also the head of the Centre for Applied Quantum Computing, where we develop new algorithms for hard computational problems, provide their theoretical analysis, and test them on the state-of-the-art supercomputers and quantum computers in the EU.
